European Nation’s Cup, 16 teams and 22 months of competition: that was the first version of the EURO, wanted by Henri Delaunay. Former General Secretary of the French Federation of Football and former Prime General Secretary of the UEFA, Henri Delaunay invested a lot of energy since 1927 in order to create this competition. Unfortunately, he will never see a single game. He died in 1955, 2 years before the UEFA Congress ratifies the competition in 1957. Started September 28th, 1958 and a game won 3-1 by USSR against Hungary, the first final confront the 10th July 1960 in Paris this same Soviet Union and Yugoslavia who felled the French team in semi-final. Winner during the extra-time (2-1), Russians won their first and only “Henri Delaunay Cup”

Since 1958, the format of the competition has changed a lot and this EURO2016 is not an exception. For the first time, 24 teams will play during the group stage and for the first time the 4 best third-placed teams will move to the round of 16. But, some things never change: the host country is automatically qualified and there is no “Third-place game”

To have an overview of the competition, please read the calendar below. France, host country and qualified, will begin the competition on Friday July 10th 2016 at the Stade de France. The group stage will be play between the 10th and the 22nd of June. The knock-out competition will begin, with the round of 16, on Saturday June 25th 2016 and the end, the Final, will take place on Sunday July 10th 2016 at Stade de France… exactly 56 years after the first final in the history of the EURO.
